Stanislav Petrov

Former USSR Lt. Col. Stanislav Petrov was in charge when their early-warning satellite signalled that the US had launched five ballistic missiles at Russia. Petrov was left with a difficult decision to retalliate and potentially start a third world war, or to follow a gut feeling and not trust the defence system.
